Metal Gear Rex Battle

- Facing up to superior hardware -

WOUNDING THE KING OF THE MECHS... You've activated the Metal Gear instead of deactivating it! You must correct the situation. Misson: to put Metal Gear back in it's place - the scrapyard!

As the bestial robot resembling a metallic dinosaur screeches to life, the scaffolding around you collapses, tossing you to the bare floor. The Metal Gear's nuclear capabilities aren't online, but it's other deadly ordinances systems have! Expect double machine gun fire from the front mounted 12.7mms (the same kind used on the M1-A1 Abrams Main Battle Tank), the anti-troop missiles, the belly laser and the ever-looming threat of being ground against the floor under it's massive tread. Rex was the king of dinosaurs for a reason, and this proves it! Here's the recommended takedown pattern for Rex's first line of defense.

Firstly, Headquarters hopes you've gathered enough Stinger Missiles and Rations. This is an ugly battle if your under-equipped. Your first step in disabling Metal Gear is to destroy it's Radome, the large ultra-sensitive radar sensor on it's left shoulder. You'll never be able to get away from Rex unless that is destroyed first!

Equip your Rations or Body Armor. As soon as the Rex screeches into action, expect to try and be gunned down by the double-mounted machine guns. Let them try and gun you down, moving off to your flank either left or right when the gunfire gets too close to your heels. Next, Rex will try and fire Anti-Troop Missiles at you, so be sure your not too far away from him. As soon as you see the Rex sit back on it's haunches after the twin machine gun bursts, expect the missiles to be coming. You can hear them 'screaming' as they are launched. Before the missiles land, try and be under or very close to Rex. This is the 'safe zone' where Rex can't hit you. As soon as all three missiles hit, move back out away from Rex, and don't stop running, because he'll try and hit you with the Vulcan Cannon mounted underneath the Rex. As soon as the laser passes just feet or inches behind you, whip around and arm your Stinger Missiles. You'll have to be fast at this and you only get one good clean shoot before he starts barraging you with gunfire again; Home in on the Radome located on the top of Rex's right 'shoulder' and shoot a missile as quickly as possible at it. Don't wait around to watch the follow-through of the missile and the explosion. Instead, Rex will be firing his machine guns at you again, so be ready to repeat the process described above until the Radome is out of commision. At no time should you ever risk running away from Rex, as it is equipped with homing missiles and radar. Also, lingering too long under Rex's massive bulk will tempt it into stomping you to a pulp under it's feet.

SKELETONS IN THE CLOSET, A VISIT FROM A FRIEND... After around eight Stingers strike the radar sensor, the mech swings violently about, lost in confusion with it's radar effectively jammed. But it isn't over yet! The Metal Gear recovers, and once again, challenges you! Just as you are about to be trampled underfoot, the Ninja appears, revealing his true nature! Hurling a brave assault on the Metal Gear just in time, this friend from the past damages the Rex considerably, putting the battle at better odds. His surprise attack catches the fiendish Metal Gear off guard and lays waste completely to the Radome. The Radome is down! For his efforts, the Ninja is only to be outdone by a Fox-Hounder. The Ninja now personally identified as Frank Jaeger has fought his final battle, with Solid Snake watching.

THE FALL OF METAL GEAR... Now that the Radome is destroyed, there is a different target to aim at. The nose cone where Liquid Snake controls the Metal Gear from hatches open to enable Liquid to manually control Rex. Repeat the process you used before, but this time, aim for Liquid in the cockpit!

A FALLING GIANT... With limited control over Metal Gear's failing capabilities, Liquid gives it his all, trying desperately to quench his thirst for your death. As you pound more and more rockets into the Metal Gear, it gets closer to malfunction. Finally, a terrible lurching and a sickening wrenching of metal can be hear, as an incapacitated Rex refuses to move. Liquid yells out in defiance as he jerks the collective stick with all his might trying to get the faltering giant to obey his command on the controls. Tiny explosions ripple the Metal Gear from the interior of it's frame, the final salute to it's short-circuiting ending in a massive explosion that leaves Solid Snake injured and unconscious.
