IN DEPTH: Solid Snake has lived a rather mysterious and nomadic past. Being raised by many people, he never knew his real parents. From an early age, he partook in military training, and was eventually recruited as a member of a black special-operations group known to a handful of individuals as Fox Hound. It was during his time in Fox Hound that he met Agent Gray Fox. Being somewhat of a mentor, Fox showed Snake the ropes and befriended him, yet the relationship was purely business, never personal.

After Gray Fox's failure to succesfully invade the Outer Heaven infrastructure to determine what a "Metal Gear" was, Big Boss then sent in Agent Solid Snake, Fox Hound's most greenest and inexperienced recruit. A whole scandal involving Big Boss and Fox Hound ensued, with Solid Snake turning away from the unit after destroying the apocalyptic Metal Gear and escaping Outer Heaven with his life, hoping never to be amongst the ranks of another Fox Hounder. Even after fleeing to the serenity of Canada, Solid Snake did not rest for long. The Central Intelligience Agency contacted him and his skills were once again needed to stop another Metal Gear threat. After ending the Uprising of Zanzibar with the death of Gray Fox and the former commander of Fox Hound, Big Boss, he stayed for a short time with the CIA. Not liking the politics and motives of the bureaucracy surrounding the agency, he cut all ties with the CIA and went into deeper seclusion, this time in remote Twin Lakes, Alaska. He resorted into working small jobs underground for mercenaries, offering his skills to the highest bidder.

Finally finding peace, Solid Snake became such an elusive personality that only two former friends knew where he resided. Living off the abundant Alaskan wilderness, he found solace in dog sleg racing which in turn helped him cope with his past. Not surprisingly, his two major subsequent missions led to a pyschological disorder known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, which he suffered from terribly from hallucinations and flashbacks from his past battlefield trauma. Snake, just about to cure his mind by racing the largest dog-sled race in the world, the Idatarod, he was recalled by his former friend with the help of the U.S. governemnt back into active duty.
